What should I expect during my first massage session?Thai bodywork is a form of massage that originated in India and migrated to Thailand. The Buddhist monks used it as a part of their practice. Because they meditated for long periods of time, their hips became stiff and painful. To alleviate the discomfort, one monk would work on another monk. After the session, the person receiving could return to meditation with better posture, relaxed hips, and deeper breathing. Thai bodywork is quite different from the traditional Swedish massage offered in most spas. Instead of a massage table, Thai bodywork is performed on a mat on the floor and while fully clothed. It incorporates stretching, deep compressions, and rocking that help to massage organs, improve flexibility, and aid in re-balancing the muscles. Thai bodywork involves closer contact than Swedish massage. To get the best results, Thai bodywork therapists utilize their bodies as leverage and tools to stretch and compress the muscles.
